Welcome, here’s our approach to support.
Among Puffins Counselling was created to be part of a mental health movement that centres people's voices, stories, and experiences over pathologising labels.
Our practice is culturally responsive, strengths-based, and anti-oppressive. We value collaboration, autonomy, and celebrate difference.
Counselling here can look different for everyone; from working through a specific problem, to an open-ended space for self-development — shaped around your needs and goals.

Hi there, thanks for flying by!
I'm an affirming counsellor based on Bunurong Country in Melbourne, Australia. Among Puffins Counselling is my solo practice, founded for those of us who've had to fight to carve out our own path in a world shaped by structures that weren't built with us in mind.
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community with lived experience of chronic illness and invisible grief, I bring a compassionate, socially-aware, anti-oppressive lens to my work.
My path has spanned a range of counselling, mentoring, and crisis intervention roles, including play therapy with young children. Along the way I've supported people across different life stages, identities, and experiences, from acute crisis to self development. Working across such different ages and circumstances has shown me just how early we start absorbing stories about who we're allowed to be, and how long those stories can quietly influence us and our wellbeing.
I work from an adaptive lens, seeing difficult patterns and “unwanted” emotions as responses that once made sense, not flaws to fix, which in my experience reduces shame and increases people's capacity to actually experience change. I especially enjoy working with people who've had a difficult history with purely diagnostic or symptom-reduction focused care, and are looking for a more affirming approach in their support.
Today, I work with women, LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent adults using a relational approach. I'm interested in you as a whole person, your emotions, your lived experience and the stories you carry about yourself. Together we work to ease suffering, build on what's already working, and find ways of moving through the world that feel less burdensome and more like you.
If you're curious about working with me, I'd love to hear from you.
A Space Where We Belong: The Story Behind Among Puffins Counselling
The Story Behind the Name
Among Puffins was founded by Liz O’Neill to create a space for anyone who has ever felt a little different.
Puffins are small, resilient seabirds that often go unnoticed whilst navigating harsh environments. They adapt creatively and thrive living on the edges. They’re unique, bold, playful and loving but are often overlooked and underestimated as they don’t fit the conventional expectations of other seabirds.
This is a space Among Puffins, where you're welcomed by a fellow outsider who gets it. A space where differences are celebrated and no voice goes unheard.
Here, you can show up without pretending. You can talk about your struggles without being treated like you’re broken. You can be neurodivergent, chronically ill, grieving, angry, confused, overwhelmed or whatever you’re carrying and be met with understanding, not judgment.
Vision
For decades, “optimal” mental health was narrowly defined, pathologising difference rather than recognising the diversity of human experience.
Our vision is to contribute to a mental health culture that moves away from conformity and towards inclusion, understanding, and respect for difference.
Mission
Our mission is to offer inclusive, affirming counselling that supports people to understand themselves, honour their differences, and live in ways that feel authentic and empowering.
